Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Macular degeneration, specifically age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye condition affecting the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Treatment options for AMD aim to slow down disease progression and manage symptoms. Here are several treatments involved:

  1. Anti-VEGF Injections: Anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) drugs are injected into the eye to inhibit the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the macula, a hallmark of wet AMD. These injections help reduce leakage and bleeding, preserving central vision.

  2. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): PDT involves injecting a light-sensitive drug into the bloodstream, which is then activated by a laser directed into the eye. This treatment targets abnormal blood vessels in wet AMD, causing them to close without damaging surrounding tissue.

  3. Laser Therapy: In some cases of AMD, especially in the past with classic or occult choroidal neovascularization, laser therapy was used to destroy abnormal blood vessels. However, this treatment is less common now due to the risk of causing further damage to the retina.

  4. Nutritional Supplements: Studies have shown that certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin, can help slow the progression of AMD, especially in its early stages. These supplements are often recommended for individuals with AMD, particularly the dry form.

  5. Low Vision Aids: For individuals with advanced AMD who experience significant vision loss, low vision aids such as magnifiers, telescopic lenses, and electronic devices can help maximize remaining vision and maintain independence in daily activities.

  6. Clinical Trials: Ongoing research includes clinical trials for new treatments such as gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and sustained drug delivery systems aimed at further improving outcomes for individuals with AMD.
